February 1st and 2nd, 2011, brought a huge blizzard to Chicago that ranks among the 3 worst the city has ever seen.
Wind speeds up to 55 / 60 mph were measured and within hours 16-22 inches of snow came to Chicago and suburbs. Tuesday, Feb 1st, commuters headed early out of the city but ca. 1.000 cars got stuck on Lake Shore Dr after accidents. Drivers abondoned their cars and eventually approx. 200 cars had to be towed away the next day.
Wednesday, most offices were closed and shops as well — however, CVS, Walgreens, Starbucks and several restaurants were open and Chicagoans could buy food and other necessities.
